Benefits of Staying Hydrated

We all know that drinking water is essential for life, not just for humans but for most animals and plants as well, but did you know all of the wonderful things that it does for you? I’ve outlined just 7 of the many benefits of staying hydrated below:

  • Maintain a healthy digestive system

Water is essential for you body. It acts to transport nutrients all around your body, feeding your organs, muscles and skin. Drinking plenty of water helps to maintain a healthy digestive tract and actually helps your body to digest your food. Without enough water or eating foods that contain water you soon get ‘backed up’…don’t let that happen to you.

  • Maintain healthy joints

Water helps to lubricate your joints. Cartilage, which is found in your joints and around the disks of your spine, is approximately 80% water. Failing to drink enough water and long term dehydration can lead to joint pain!

  • Maintain healthy clear skin

Your skin is approximately 30% water so it stands to reason that staying well hydrated will help your skin to look and feel younger for longer. Drinking plenty of water can also help to protect against skin conditions such as acne as it helps the body to transport and flush out toxins via the digestive system.

  • Perform at your peak during exercise

If you are exercising or competing in sports then staying hydrated is important to help your body to perform at it’s best and help you to recover faster. Drinking water before and during exercise can also help to prevent muscle cramps.

  • Brain function

Being properly hydrated is important for brain function, being even slightly dehydrated can lead to changes in mood, and concentration. It can also impair your memory and have a negative effect on those who suffer with anxiety and depression.

  • Combat headaches

Staying hydrated can also protect you against getting headaches and can reduce the length and severity of headaches if you do suffer with them. If you do get regular headaches try increasing the amount of water you are drinking.

  • Deliver oxygen to your vital organs

Roughly 80 – 90% of blood is actually water so staying hydrated ensures that your body will be able to transport oxygen around your body.

Lots of people will say that they don’t like drinking plain water as they don’t like the taste but there are lots of different ways that you can flavour water without adding in anything bad for you. You can also try using a water filter to see if that helps, different mineral content in the water you are drinking will alter it’s flavour. For example high iron levels can lead to a metallic taste, more magnesium can make the water more bitter, whilst calcium can make it milky and smooth.

You can use any of the following to flavour water so that you can increase your intake and help support a healthy lifestyle:

  • High grade essential oils
  • Fresh fruit
  • Cucumber
  • Mint leaves

Are you getting enough water? Take some time of the next few days and track what you’re drinking – don’t track tea or coffee – you may end up surprised at just how little you are currently drinking.
