Who are you?

Have you ever heard that phrase “you are the sum of the 5 people closest to you”? I’ve always been a bit sceptical of the phrase. I always just thought that I am who am I. How could the people around me so heavily effect who I am? Sure, they have an influence on me because I respect their thoughts and opinions and I’ll have an influence on them, but at the end of the day we are our own people, right??

But lately I’ve started to give it a bit more thought, to look at the people around me and see who they are and how they impact me. Being surrounded by positive supportive people is key for us all and when you align yourself with giving to others, giving part of yourself to support, help and guide them then you need to be able to fill up your own cup of love so that you can keep on going.

Are the people around me the kind of people that I want to be? But I don’t think it’s as simple as just looking at 5 people. I think it’s more complex than that. Yes, those 5 people can change based on the phase of life that you are in, but I think maybe those 5 come from certain different groups within your circle.

Group 1 – Family – some I’ve chosen and some I’ve been born into. All of them drive me nuts at times but all of them I love and cherish. They are my constant, my rock, they support me and want me to succeed. I look to them daily for inspiration and motivation. My daughter makes me laugh and smile everyday and reminds me of why I do what I do, she has such a generous and caring character and I hope that never changes. Leigh is a daily inspiration to me, overcoming physical limitations and refusing to allow them to hold him back whilst fighting depression and anxiety at the same time.

Group 2 – My Girls – these are the ladies that I have known for so long that I can’t remember a time when they weren’t in my life. A group of ladies who have seen me at my worst but still stood by me. They know all the secrets there are to know, so I sure as heck need to keep them close. We have weathered many seasons together and I know that there will be many more to come. These women are all superhero’s in my eyes, mums, entrepreneurs, wives, friends, mental health advocates, and so much more.

Group 3 – My MIBA tribe – a group of amazing women that I have connected and bonded with over the last 18months. What started as just joining an online networking and support group soon grew into something much bigger. The ladies I have met in Mums In Business Association have become and integral part of my life, my business life and my personal life. I look to them for support, inspiration and an ass kicking when I need it.

Autobiography – Laid Bare – Mums In Business Association

This group started from nothing and now has over 150k followers across the globe. The 2 women responsible for it – Leona and Estelle – have become people that I greatly respect and look up to but not only that they have become amazing friends and confidents. Recently I read the autobiography that Leona and Estelle have written – Laid Bare – and I was humbled yet again by these 2 women.

So, am I the sum of the 5 people closest to me? I’m still not too sure about that but I do know that I am incredibly lucky to have all these people in my life. Who are you? Are you surrounded by people that lift you up?
